ARCHIVAL PACKING MATERIAL

ACID FREE ARCHIVAL BLUE/GRAY AND WHITE CORRUGATED BOARD

Blue/Gray and White Board (Sheet) sets the standard in the next generation of archival corrugated board. Greatly exceeding the quality of other boards available on the market today, and passing much more stringent testing for permanence than simply the Photo Activity Test, this is the next generation board available today.

This multi-use B-Flute 1/8" thick board is blue/gray on one side and white on the other, making it perfectly suited for framing, box making, and other types of enclosures. Objects can sit against a non-pigmented surface, while still maintaining the traditional blue/gray color on the outside.

  • 100% bleached alpha cellulose
  • Without the use of recycled or wooden fibers
  • No optical brighteners
  • Kappa level: 1 – 2 = lignin-free (TAPPI T 236 om-99)
  • pH cold extraction: 8.0 – 9.5 (TAPPI T 509 om-02)
  • Alkaline reserve (buffer) > 3% calcium carbonate
  • Adhesive: Potato starch, ph 7.0, moisture proof.
Certification ANSI IT 9.16 / ISO 14523-1999 (PAT test), ISO 9706 - Permanency requirements for paper
ANSI / NISO Z.39.48-1992 Permanence for paper in Library and Archives

ACID FREE FOAM CORE

Natural White Acid-Free Conservation Foam board is used as a backing board for paintings, and may be incorporated into framing packages for works on paper. It is highly warp-resistant and engineered to retain its thickness during mounting.

Created for conservation mounting and framing, acid-free mounting boards deliver two-sided protection from damaging pollutants and harmful gases. This foam board is the recommended solution for photographers and artists who require a backing that will add value to high-end artwork. It consists of a chemically inert core faced with natural white pH neutral paper liners. Foam Core Boards are in compliance with PAT (Photographic Activity Test) standards.

Foam Center: This chemically inert foam center is highly warp-resistant and engineered to retain its thickness during mounting.

LINERS: The natural white liners offer a pH value ranging from 7.5 - 9.5 and are buffered with 3 -5 % calcium carbonate reserve (ASTM IT9.2-191, Sec.5.2) to retain acid-free characteristics longer. The liners are 100% High Alpha Cellulose, virgin pulp free from ground wood and/or post consumer materials (ASTM D1030, X5). Other characteristics are as follows:
  • Contains no lignin (TAPPI 236cm-85 KAPPA #5 or less)
  • Free from metallic impurities (TAPPI 266)
  • Free from residual impurities such as bleach, sulfur or peroxide (TAPPI T406cm-88)
  • Contains no rosin or alum rosin sizing (ASTM D549-88
Is stable under ultraviolet light (TAPPI 452 om-87)

GLASSINE ROLL

Glassine roll comes 36", 48", and 60" wide.
Glassine made from a selected chemical pulp is acid free, has a neutral pH and is unbuffered. This "archival" grade of glassine is used for a variety of applications - interleaving between prints, drawings, pastels, book illustrations and textiles, making temporary envelopes for shipping unframed or un-matted works on paper. It is translucent, off white in color. Glassine is not recommended for long term storage.

ACID FREE TISSUE

Non-buffered acid free tissue used as archival packing material is machine made in the USA of 100% high alpha cellulose, has a neutral pH, no deckles, and a smooth finish. “Un-buffered tissue” is used with protein-based materials (wools, silk, leather, fur) and other materials sensitive to alkali (silver, colored photos).

When crushed, it can provide “pillow” surface to lay an object, although it will compress. It is suitable for interleaving, wrapping, and cushioning and also sufficiently soft for use with textiles, padding for textiles in shoulders, sleeves as well as shoes, purses, parasols.

COROPLAST®

White Coroplast® is a high quality extruded thin walled corrugated plastic sheet formulated specifically for use in packing. It is extremely durable, waterproof and resistant to stains and most chemicals. Coroplast® is produced from a high impact polypropylene copolymer 157" (4mm) thickness. Coroplast® uses a copolymer resin in order to increase impact and low temperature performance. Chemically, the sheet is inert, with a NIL pH factor. It does not have anti static agents and is not corona treated. At regular temperatures, most oils, solvents and water have no effect, allowing it to perform under adverse weather conditions.

It can be used as a backing material for paintings and framed works on paper and in the manufacture of crates.

Archival Coroplast® is available. It is much more costly than Coroplast® and there is disagreement among professionals if it is a superior product.

SILICONE RELEASE PAPER

Silicone release paper is a vegetable parchment paper white in color, similar to glassine, but impregnated with silicone which provides a non stick surface on both sides of the paper. The paper is used for wrapping artwork, in packing, storage and restoration. It is also used in the dry mounting process when working with waxes and adhesives and as slip sheets for printing. Silicone release paper will not stick to art work. Silicone release tape is recommended for use with silicone release paper.

DuPont™ Tyvek® - Soft Wrap Tyvek® Archival

Tyvek® Soft Wrap is an archival "non-woven", non abrasive,gas-permeable,water resistant, breathable, and inert material. The fabric-like soft structure material has a waffle like pattern. Museums, galleries, artists, and art packers use Tyvek® Soft Wrap to wrap and protect paintings, sculptures, drawings, documents, and many other art objects during shipping and storage.

Tyvek® offers some advantages over more costly materials. Because it is non-woven it does not have exposed fibers that can catch on fragile surfaces. Due to its durability it can be used against heavy objects. Tyvek® Soft Wrap can be easily glued or taped, and can be fabricated into dust covers, sleeves, garment bags, storage bags – or taken from the roll as needed to create clean work areas, table tops, or displays.
